New Brunswick residents are in the throes of a devastating rate shock, with more than 25% of households burdened by energy costs that far exceed the acceptable 6% of their income. Astonishingly, this number is expected to surge by another 15 to 20% in the coming few years, forcing families into impossible choices between basic necessities like food, medicine, and electricity. This dire situation has already resulted in tragic losses where even medically necessary equipment has been disconnected, leading to fatal consequences. Losing even one life in such a manner is utterly unacceptable.
