You may remember that just a little over a year ago, NBCPD had featured a news articles about a young autistic man who was incarcerated at the Shepody Healing Centre, even though he had never been convicted of a crime. After some incidents where he was found not criminally responsible for his actions, he was essentially jailed in a federal correctional centre simply because the province just did not have a good place for him. It doesn’t sound like something that could happen in Canada, let alone in our little province of New Brunswick, but indeed it did. His father, Darrell Tidd, has been fighting every day to get his son out of a place were he could actually have a person convicted of 1st degree murder as a neighbour. His son, Devan, was not even allowed to have a cellphone.
Well, after six years of fighting and advocating for his son, Darrell finally has the news he’s been waiting for. In an open letter to the media on Tuesday, Tidd said his son “will finally be released into the community with the supervision he requires, long after he legally should have been”. (Telegraph-Journal July 29 2026). This type of placement would not be possible without highly trained staff and Devan is set to be moving into a Level 4 special care home, which provides 24-hour supervision, high levels of assistance, and specialized staff.
NBCPD wants to congratulate Darrell and Devan on their advocacy win and wish Darrell the best of luck as he transitions into the next chapter of his life!
