The New Brunswick Coalition of Persons with Disabilities is calling for changes including an end to winter disconnections province wide, to stop situations like this from happening. We’ve also launched a petition calling on the Government of New Brunswick to implement a program like one in Ontario called the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP). The LEAP program provides emergency assistance to people who are behind on their bills.
At the Energy and Utilities Board hearings on NB Power rate increases, questioning and input from Shelley Petit, Chair of the New Brunswick Coalition of Persons of Disabilities, played a key role in the utility’s 2026 rate increase request being denied.

One week before the provincial election, NBCPD issued a report analyzing and criticizing the platform of each provincial party, and what their platforms would mean for New Brunswickers with disabilities.

In an opinion column for the NB Media Co-op, NBCPD Chair Shelley Petit wrote that “our province is awash in a virtual tsunami of disability.” She said the NBCPD aims to change the perception and treatment of, and attitudes towards, the disability community in New Brunswick. It will be done through continuous advocacy.
